LONG-PRACTISING lawyer George Coleman has been appointed as a judge of the High Court with effect from the start of January, the Judicial Service Commission announced yesterday.
The commission also announced that two senior magistrates, David Munsu and Duard Kesslau, have been appointed as acting judges of the High Court for the period from 16 January to 15 July 2022.
Coleman obtained degrees in law at Stellenbosch University and the University of Cape Town in South Africa in 1982 and 1994, respectively, according to a statement released by the commission’s secretary, Sakeus Akweenda.
He started his career as a public prosecutor in Windhoek in 1985, and in 1989 went into private law practice as an advocate.
Coleman has two master’s degrees in law. The first, in the field of international protection of human rights and constitutional law, was awarded by the SOAS University of London in 1988, and he obtained the second, in international trade law, from the University of South Africa in 2009.
Munsu, who is a divisional magistrate stationed at Rundu, was an acting judge at the Oshakati High Court from January to the end of June this year as well.
He holds degrees in law, obtained in 2006 and 2008, from the University of Namibia.
Kesslau is a divisional magistrate at Otjiwarongo.
His career in Namibia’s justice system started in 1998, when he began to work as a public prosecutor. He later joined the Directorate of Legal Aid as a defence lawyer and was appointed as a magistrate in 2009.
Kesslau is a graduate of the University of the Orange Free State in South Africa, where he obtained BCom and LLB degrees in 1995 and 1998, respectively, the commission noted.
